Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative (IOJI) serves as an Indonesian independent think tank and policy advocacy group to achieve good, sustainable, and equitable ocean governance. In attaining our vision, IOJI has determined the following missions: Initially, we support the Government of Indonesia in mainstreaming, implementing, and enforcing sustainable and equitable ocean governance. Second, we advocate for sustainable and equitable ocean policies at the local, national, regional, and international level. Further, we strengthen the network with government, academia, and civil societies at the national, regional, and international levels working on ocean issues to influence the decision-making at every level of government to attain good and sustainable and equitable ocean governance. Lastly, we empower the small-scale fishermen, the marginalized coastal dependent people, and fisheries workers in defending and striving for their basic human rights. IOJI is currently looking for an Admin Support to assist the Operations Team in carrying out administrative tasks to ensure smooth organizational operations. In attaining such objectives, IOJI is seeking for qualified candidates for the following position.

Job Responsibility

The Communications Manager will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). They will work closely with the Program Managers and the Graphics Designer & Multimedia Officer, and will be responsible for providing comprehensive communication support across all of IOJI’s workstreams. The responsibilities of the Communications Manager include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement public outreach strategy that could help IOJI advancing its objectives, vision, and mission, as well as increasing IOJI’s public exposure and prominence as a leading Indonesian think tank and policy advocacy organization.
  • Develop and implement communications programs and activities, including planning and budgeting. This includes developing editorial plan and media monitoring plan.
  • Develop communications standard operating procedures that could help improve IOJI’s public outreach accountability. Conduct media handling, including managing relationships with media outlets, drafting and distributing press releases, coordinating media coverage for IOJI’s activities.
  • Develop and manage content for IOJI’s digital media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.).
  • Conduct media monitoring and analysis, both printed and digital media platforms, to assess public and stakeholder perception to be presented to the Board of Directors and Program Managers.
  • Oversee all internal and external communications, ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.
  • Provide coaching and assistance for Program Team Members to help them improve communications skills and become Key Opinion Leaders.
  • Supporting internal communication needs and ensuring alignment across all outreach channels.
  • Assisting in the organization of public events, webinars, and media briefings.

Job Description

Communications Manager is expected to create, implement and oversee communications program, that effectively describe and promote the organization, its objectives, vision, and mission across all communications platforms (printed and digital). This role provides supervision and direction to staff, often works alongside programmatic team, and provide assistance for programmatic team members to become the Key Opinion Leaders.

Key internal relationships

  1. Chief Operating Officer: Direct report.
  2. Board of Directors: Social media content and articles’ signoff.
  3. Graphics Designer & Multimedia Officer: Teamwork. 
  4. Program Officer, Program Managers and Senior Advisors: Coordination on social media content and articles. 
  5. Human Resources & General Affairs: Coordination for meeting, event, recruitment, procurement of goods and services, and travel preparation. 
  6. Finance officer: Coordination for budgeting and financial reporting related to communication activities.

Knowledges and Experiences

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Media Studies, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in communications, media relations, or digital content development, preferably in the non-profit, advocacy, or development sector. 
  • Proven experience in drafting and editing communication materials in both English and Bahasa Indonesia.
  • Experience managing social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn) and website content.
  • Familiarity with media monitoring tools, analytics, and digital engagement metrics.
  • Understanding of environmental law, ocean and climate change nexus maritime security, marine, coastal and communities, human rights at sea and access to justice is an advantage.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with WordPress-based web backend and design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
