About Us
The Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative (IOJI) is an influential independent think-tank and policy advocacy organization that supports Indonesia, as the largest archipelagic country in the world, to realize marine governance based on the principles of effective protection, sustainable use, and equitable welfare. IOJI builds collaboration with state and non-state actors to influence decision-making processes at the national, regional and international levels by providing various scientific evidence-based policy recommendations. IOJI also works to assist and empower people whose lives depend on the sea, such as small fishermen, coastal communities and migrant seafaring workers, in defending and fighting for their basic rights.
IOJI works with various partners with the following objectives::
IOJI Establishment
IOJI was established on January 24 2020 in the form of an association and obtained legal entity status from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia based on Decree No. AHU0001022.AH.01.07 dated 4 February 2020. Most of the founders, management, supervisors and employees of IOJI are former members of the Task Force for the Eradication of Illegal Fishing established through Presidential Regulation Number 115.
President Joko Widodo on October 19, 2015 signed Presidential Decree 115/2015 concerning the Task Force for the Eradication of Illegal Ad Catching because violations and crimes in the field of fisheries, especially illegal fishing, are very concerning.
The Task Force, also known as Task Force 115, is under and directly responsible to the President. The Task Force is tasked with developing and implementing law enforcement operations in an effort to effectively and efficiently eradicate illegal fishing in the Indonesian jurisdictional sea area. The Task Force’s duties also cover unreported fishing activities.
IOJI was formed to ensure the continuity of the mission and achievement of the goals of this Task Force 115, as well as to carry out other missions according to the development of the organization.
